The Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board (KTHSMB) was established as part of the Katsina State Government’s strategic effort to strengthen and institutionalize the administration of secondary healthcare services within the state. The creation of the Board was driven by the growing need for a centralized and professional body that would oversee, coordinate, and manage the operations of government hospitals in line with best practices.
Founded following the enactment of the enabling law under the Katsina State Hospital Services Management Board Law, the Board formally came into existence in the early years following the creation of Katsina State in 1987, after it was carved out from the old Kaduna State. Initially operating under the Ministry of Health, the increasing complexity of hospital operations and the demand for more efficient service delivery led to the full autonomy of the Board.
KTHSMB was tasked with the responsibility of managing all general and specialist hospitals across the 34 local government areas of the state. Over time, the Board has grown to become a cornerstone of healthcare delivery in Katsina State, playing a pivotal role in workforce management, hospital performance oversight, infrastructure development, and policy implementation.
With a focus on accountability, transparency, and quality assurance, KTHSMB continues to evolve to meet the healthcare needs of a rapidly growing population. Its mandate has expanded to include staff training, data management, community outreach coordination, and the integration of digital tools for better service monitoring and delivery.
